Engineering selection guide

How to Select a Submersible Sewage Pump

Size sewage and drainage pumps using flow at total head, then verify solids passage, fibers, wet-well levels, motor protection and the installation arrangement.

A practical selection sequence

1. Describe the wastewater

State whether the liquid is raw sewage, screened wastewater or drainage water. Provide maximum solids size, concentration, fibers, sand, temperature and chemistry. A photograph cannot prove a particular pump's solids-passage rating.

2. Calculate flow and total head

Provide inflow or required transfer rate, pit minimum and maximum levels, delivery elevation, pipe length and friction losses. Check the intended duty point on the exact model curve and consider start frequency and wet-well storage.

3. Choose installation and protection

Compare free-standing, guide-rail, submerged or other arrangements for the site. Confirm minimum submergence, cable length, lifting access, level controls, seal monitoring and motor protection required by the selected model.

4. Confirm maintenance and discharge

Request the model's certified solids passage, impeller type, discharge connection, power supply, allowable operating range and service procedure. Provide information about existing valves and piping if this replaces an installed pump.

Frequently asked questions

Does a large outlet guarantee large solids passage?

No. Verify the exact impeller and manufacturer's stated passage size.

Is a drainage pump the same as a sewage pump?

Not necessarily. The allowable solids and fibers depend on the selected hydraulic design.
