How to size a solar water pump
Start with the water you need to move, where it starts, and where it must arrive. Then compare a complete pump, controller and solar-array combination at the required duty point—not just a motor's HP label.
A practical selection sequence
1. Define the water demand
Record the required daily volume, delivery schedule, seasonal changes and any storage-tank capacity. Convert that demand to the flow needed during realistic pumping hours; daily volume and instantaneous flow are different specifications.
2. Establish the actual lift
For a borehole, use the pumping (dynamic) water level, not only the static level. Add the elevation from that water level to the outlet or tank, delivery pressure if required, and estimated friction through pipe, valves and fittings. This is the total dynamic head (TDH) for the chosen flow.
3. Compare the whole solar system
Find a catalog performance point that meets both required flow and TDH. Check pump and controller voltage/current compatibility, panel-array configuration and the intended AC/DC or DC power arrangement. Maximum flow and maximum head are endpoints of a curve, not a simultaneous operating point.
4. Confirm the installation
Check borehole diameter, water quality, dry-running protection, cable length, pipe size and available sunlight. A surface pump needs an appropriate suction arrangement; a deep-well submersible pump has different installation and cooling requirements.
