Selecting centrifugal and multistage pumps

A series name narrows the layout. The operating duty point and current model curve determine whether a particular pump can do the job efficiently and reliably.

A practical selection sequence

1. Specify flow and head together

State the required flow and total dynamic head at the same operating condition. Include static elevation, discharge pressure and friction losses at that flow. If the system operates at multiple rates, provide minimum, normal and peak conditions.

2. Match the system to a pump curve

The actual duty point is where the system and pump curves intersect. Ask for the current curve and verify the duty point, power, efficiency and allowable operating range. Do not select from a maximum-head or maximum-flow headline alone.

3. Check suction and liquid

For a suction-lift or hot-water installation, check available net positive suction head against the model's required NPSH with the engineer's margin. Specify temperature, chemistry, solids and any material or seal constraints.

4. Choose an arrangement

Inline and horizontal centrifugal layouts solve different space and pipe-connection needs. A multistage layout can build higher pressure across multiple impellers. Confirm the actual model dimensions, motor supply and maintenance access before ordering.
