Engineering selection guide

How to Select a Progressive Cavity Screw Pump

A progressive cavity pump may suit controlled transfer of viscous liquids or sludge. Size it from the real fluid, required flow, pressure and suction conditions, then confirm rotor, stator and drive limits.

A practical selection sequence

1. Describe the liquid at operating temperature

Provide viscosity, density, temperature, solids size and concentration, abrasiveness and any chemicals. A liquid that thickens or settles during shutdown may need a different startup and cleaning plan from one that remains uniform.

2. Define flow, pressure and suction

State minimum, normal and peak flow; discharge pressure; suction level or pressure; pipe length; and duty cycle. A positive-displacement pump can build pressure against a restriction, so specify a suitable relief or shutdown arrangement for the complete system.

3. Confirm construction and speed

Check rotor and stator compatibility with the actual liquid, along with seal, joint and wetted-metal materials. Ask JIABO to confirm allowable speed, solids passage, dry-run protection and expected wear for abrasive service.

4. Request the exact-model proposal

Ask for capacity versus speed and differential pressure, drive power, suction limitations, connection dimensions and maintenance requirements. Do not infer a model's performance from the appearance of a factory photograph.

Frequently asked questions

Can a screw pump run dry?

Do not assume so. Stator and seal damage may occur; ask for the exact model's dry-run limits and protection method.

Does viscosity alone determine the model?

No. Flow, differential pressure, suction, temperature, solids and materials also matter.
